Immortals Fenyx Rising undoubtedly owes a huge debt to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, borrowing wholesale as it does from its core gameplay mechanics and narrative structure. However, what Ubisoft Quebec has come up with here also adds enough of its own spin on proceedings, with a strong personality and sense of humour sat alongside some brilliantly designed puzzles, flashy, satisfying combat and a huge world full of secrets, treasures and Ancient Greek mythology to discover. It may falter slightly in the final stretch by wrestling away player freedom and funnelling you through its overly long endgame...

Cutting out Immortals' open-world exploration for pure puzzle-solving isn't a total loss, but the cleverness of these new puzzles is matched only by how frustrating these trials can be.

Ubisoft's latest open-world is one of their most colourful, imaginative and plain fun in quite some time.

My final conclusion. I think Immortals is more fun than Breath of the Wild. There I said it! No taking it back now. It is funny, a blast to play, beautiful, and has some of the best music in any video game. I do not understand why Ubisoft released it with so little fanfare and sandwiched it in between so many gigantic releases. If this game had come out either a few months earlier or later I think it would have been a huge hit. As it is routinely on sale and I can easily recommend it to anyone who...

Immortals: Fenyx Rising takes Ubisoft in a new direction, different from that of Assassin’s Creed. The game still utilizes an open-world, the way it goes about it is very different. While it doesn’t bring anything new or innovative to the table of action-adventures, Immortals is a short and charming colorful journey into Greek mythology.

Fenyx’s nerdy charm really carries the story. Her enthusiasm for mythology is infectious. But the game’s monotony lingers in the background, whether that’s through level design or combat encounters. Still, at a breezy runtime — story-focused playthroughs take about 30 hours — and with such stunning vistas, even Zeus, famous for his harsh judgment, would forgive the game’s developers. 7/10

Immortals Fenyx Rising is cheerful fun, offering a fresh take on Greek mythology that is cartoonish but with just enough humanity to keep it grounded. While the game plays like a open world epic, every mechanic in Immortals is tied to well-designed puzzles. Though the actions you take become repetitive, the story and writing keep things lively enough to see Immortals Fenyx Rising through to the end.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is what happens when Assassin's Creed Odyssey meets The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are some ideas the latest IP from Ubisoft can claim as its own, but it's impossible to deny the comparisons between it and the two open-world juggernauts. As such, it feels like the French publisher has bundled together a collection of ideas, themes, and features already done better by past games. Not everything has to be a ground-breaking innovation, though, and Immortals Fenyx Rising settles for its lot with a tongue in cheek adventure through Greek mythology. While it's hardly...

Immortals: Fenyx Rising isn’t the game I was expecting. I was prepared for a big Ubisoft open-world action game filled with colorful vistas, Greek gods, and some elements inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild. It is all of that, but it’s not just Assassin’s Creed: Hyrule. It’s a welcome streamlining of large-scale Ubisoft game design, full of great puzzles and amusing storytelling.

Immortals Fenyx Rising was first unveiled to the public as Gods and Monsters back at E3 2019, as Ubisoft’s last surprise announcement of the season. We weren’t able to see a lot from it, but it did look like a game inspired by Breath of the Wild and Greek mythology. Ubisoft would proceed to present us with a handful of gameplay trailers and videos showcasing what Immortals was all about, and yep, it looked even more like a Greek Breath of the Wild. Bear in mind, this is far from a bad thi...

Immortals Fenyx Rising brings a new IP from Assassin's Creed developer Ubisoft Quebec, but how does it stack up? Is this an experience to be heralded by Zeus, or like Icarus, did it fly too close to the sun? Nick breaks it down in our review.

What’s in a name? It’s not very often that we see an announced title go through an identity crisis, but that’s what happened earlier this year when the previously announced Ubisoft title Gods & Monsters was re-revealed as the newly titled Immortals Fenyx Rising. Like many, I scoffed initially at the change, seemingly generic and not particularly linked to the ancient world of Greek gods and mystical creatures that were so captivating in the first place. Having spent more than 20 hours i...

Immortals: Fenyx Rising, a game many compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before release, has turned out to be a big of a disappoinment.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is the third large open-world game from Ubisoft in as many months, offering yet another map littered with things to do and side-quests to complete. For those worried about burnout, Immortals moves to set itself apart from its cousins with a departure from gritty realism and a stylised emphasis on Greek lore.

Ultimately, Immortals Fenyx Rising may not take itself too seriously but it ends up offering an emotional story of family drama with some genuinely funny moments. There is a lot of familiarity both in the game's DNA and the core gameplay loops, but it is still a fun experience nonetheless. Immortals Fenyx Rising, as with all new IP, may have been a risky jump for Ubisoft, but it was a leap worth taking.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a visually stunning, heartfelt, and welcoming game for everyone and easily lands the honor of being my game of the year.

For the most part, Ubisoft games undeniably pull from a certain blueprint, one the company has been continually iterating on since the good ol’ days of Assassin’s Creed 2 and Far Cry 3. It’s not often that its games draw heavy comparisons to outside sources but Immortals Fenyx Rising changes that with its obvious parallels to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A few solid puzzles and a color-soaked art direction don’t propel this game to Olympian heights as it is weighed down by its repetitive nature, relentlessly corny sense of humor, and hand-holdy design.

Before this week, the only thing we knew about Gods & Monsters – whoops, we mean Immortals Fenyx Rising – was that Ubisoft changed the title because Monster Energy reportedly objected to it. Now we’ve spent some time with it – gliding through the cotton-puff clouds and galloping through its lush, vibrant meadows – it’s catapulted itself into our hearts and our best-games-of-2020 list. Surprised? Yeah, us too… which isn’t an easy feat as we close out the oh-so-shocking year of 2020, is it?

Overall, Immortals Fenyx Rising isn't doing anything particularly revolutionary. While it does put it own spin on a tried and true formula, its gameplay and structure still feel familiar. Calling it more of the same isn't entirely inaccurate. However, when that "same" is an engaging open world action-adventure that reminds players of some of the best games of the last few years, then it's fair to call Immortals Fenyx Rising more of a good thing.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising, the umpteenth open-world game developed by Ubisoft, didn't have it easy right from the start. Originally announced as Gods and Monster, a very plain that name that however does encapsulate well what the game is all about, the open-world title completely disappeared from everyone's radar until earlier this year, when it was announced that the game would be named Immortals: Fenyx Rising. Even with the name change, Immortals: Fenyx Rising did not look much different from before: the Zelda: Breath of the Wild similarities were uncanny, despite the different setting, rooted in Greek Mythology.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising is an excellent new adventure title for Ubisoft, full to bursting with genuine comedy, excellent gameplay, and devious puzzles. While there are a few technical hiccups, underutilized DualSense, and sub-30 fps Switch ports, the game is fantastic on all platforms. Come for the bizarre Greek mythology, stay for the stellar gameplay -- Immortals: Fenyx Rising is a fantastic holiday treat.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is an excellent game filled with satisfying activities, wonderful movement, and action-packed combat. There's a significant amount of content here and it completely dodges the copy-pasted nature of Odyssey, making for an open world worth exploring.

When a powerful titan defeats the Greek gods and scatters them across the Golden Isle, an unproven shield-bearer named Fenyx washes up on shore. More of a storyteller than a soldier, Fenyx must now write a legend of their own, reuniting the gods and challenging the evil force known as Typhon in an ultimate underdog story. Much like its protagonist, Immortals Fenyx Rising strives to be more than a game that just repeats the glories of others; it adds its own mythical flair on top of developer Ubisoft Quebec’s previous work on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The result is an exciting...

Sadly, however, it doesn’t feel particularly unique, mythological setting aside. Immortals takes inspiration from many of its Ubisoft predecessors, as well as some other big titles, but it doesn’t really do a good enough job of differentiating itself. There’s no denying that there’s a great time to be had on the Golden Isle, just don’t go into it expecting anything genre-defining.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a charming and fun adventure into Greek mythology with Ubisoft's trademark core design elements thrown in to support the experience. It is a worthwhile adventure for those looking to scratch that Breath of the Wild itch, but one that experienced Ubisoft fans may feel is a little too familiar.

It’s likely that those who take a chance on Immortals Fenyx Rising will be pleasantly surprised, especially once they’ve got past its opening handful of hours and developed their character a little. While it may seem a little basic at first, and players may wander into encounters that they’re really not prepared for, it soon settles down into a hugely enjoyable historical romp that is suitable for all ages and skill levels. The cutesy art style is just the icing on the cake, drawing you into a world that is charming and vibrant. With its clear Breath of the Wild...

Ubisoft has a knack for creating beautiful, expansive open worlds, but none of them are as compelling to explore as Immortals Fenyx Rising. It's a sprawling, colorful playground with plenty of nooks and crannies to get lost in.

The comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are absolutely unavoidable with Immortals Fenyx Rising. It’s an enormous and gorgeous sandbox that lets you basically go anywhere and do anything. Its puzzles are reminiscent of the beloved Nintendo title. Its visuals seem to be inspired by a mix of Breath of the Wild and Disney Animation. There are even cheeky references in the game itself poking fun at BotW’s breakable weapons, so Immortals is clearly self-aware of its influences.

With Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Ubisoft has created a refreshingly compact throwback open-world adventure that can be forgiven for its aggressive repurposing of other games best bits because it shapes them to fits its own style. The exploration is brisk and eventful, the puzzles are varied, with the right level of challenge and simplicity, and the approach to storytelling ultimately pays off. The DualSense features are a bit hit and miss, and it’s not exactly the best advert for the power of PS5, but much like the game it cribs from, Immortals’ qualities outshine any need for major technical showcases.

As far as next-gen titles go, Immortals Fenyx Rising is definitely one you should be adding to your list. It’s available on almost every platform - sorry, mobile gamers - and looks fantastic on the Xbox Series X, which I got to review it on. Overall, it’s a charming, cerebral and funny time-sink adventure that’ll really cheer you up and distract you if you’re having a quiet festive season this year.

Still, Immortals Fenyx Rising is one of the best games of the year. It doesn’t matter if its inspiration is so blatant when the team uses that as only a springboard. This isn’t a repaint of Breath of the Wild, but rather an evolution of it, and more often than not it makes smarter gameplay decisions that in full create a more enjoyable, irresistible world. The disjointed, sometimes crass tone leaves a bad taste, especially among those looking to enjoy this with their kids or siblings, but as clear as the throughline is between Breath of the Wild and Immortals...

Immortals: Fenyx Rising is a vast and entertaining adventure with excellent gameplay. Unfortunately, the storyline and quest system are weak and the game feels rushed. It's a fun game but one that lives in Breath of the Wild's shadow.
Read Full ReviewImmortals Fenyx Rising gives us a gorgeous world to explore, filled with mythological beasts, deities, and powers to wield. Its combat is satisfying, with plenty of choice in upgrades, while its central characters, comedic tone, and storytelling are a real highlight. Seeing Fenyx’s saga through to the end, with amusing commentary from Zeus, Prometheus, and other gods along the way, is a treat. Its Achilles Heel, though, is that so much of the puzzle gameplay feels like going through the motions instead of clever challenges. In the end, I wish Immortals Fenyx Rising had tried to soar just a little...
