Altogether, Lies of P is a stunningly fun Soulslike that works great for both genre newcomers and veterans. Culminating gameplay aspects from those which have come before and combining them with a unique twist on the source material, Lies of P feels as one-of-a-kind as the puppet who wished he could be a real boy that the game is based on.

Since the release of the instant classic Bloodborne, all the way back in 2014, fans of the game, as well as From Software’s Souls games in general, have constantly been clamoring for more, be it in the shape of a sequel or even a remaster bumping its framerate to 60. That made other studios try to come up with clones, spiritual sequels or love letters to that seminal title. Games like Steelrising, for instance, sure came close, but didn’t particularly stick the landing. One of these title...

So, if you’re the type of person who thinks that “fun” is the only relevant criteria for what makes a good game, then have at it. I sincerely think you’ll find a lot to like, and that’s rad. However, if you’re someone who yearns to see growth and advancement within the medium, then this is going to just befuddle you. I think Neowiz shows off a great deal of talent with Lies of P. I just hope what they come up with next is something actually original.

Lies of P is a fantastic gothic Soulslike that is worth playing even during this hectic game season. Pick it up if you want a game that will bite back.

Lies Of P is one of the best Soulslike games to enter the genre, and on multiple occasions builds on the games that inspired it, adding refinements that result in a better gameplay experience. However it emulates its influences a little too closely, and fails to hit the same highs as the games that it has clearly used as a skeleton, inviting comparisons that aren't always flattering. Along with an incredibly disruptive difficulty spike, Lies Of P stands as a game that is very nearly great, and will scratch the right itch for fans of the genre to stick with...

Lies of P is a masterclass in utilising passion and inspiration to create something distinct. While its execution isn’t perfect, the enthralling grimdark world of Krat and the overall excellent combat make for a fun experience many Souls-like fans are sure to enjoy.

Ultimately, for a first attempt, Lies of P is a solid Soulslike that should keep fans of the genre happy and frustrated for the entire runtime. It’s clear Neowiz and Round8 have an affection for their inspiration even if they don’t quite have the skill to match.

Lies of P started off as being a game that wasn’t even on my radar until a few months ago, and ever since I played the demo, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s easily one of the best Soulslike games I’ve played that didn’t come from FROMSOFTWARE, and that’s saying something. From the visuals, the sound direction, the gameplay, and just about everything else, Lies of P is a fantastic Soulslike, with few flaws. That aside, I do wish that the parry system had a longer window and that the bosses were as punishing as they are. But that...

Even if you're not a die-hard Souls-like fan, Lies of P has something to offer. It boasts content that's distinct from the game and, in my opinion, ranks among the best Souls-like titles to date. It can even hold its own against the mainline FromSoftware titles. So, if you're prepared to navigate the city of Krat with a web of lies and refine your abilities to confront the twisted, plague-infested remnants of the world

It’s rare to see a game in this genre so decisively match the quality of FromSoft themselves. If you love recursive action RPGs, Lies of P is gorgeous, challenging, absorbing, polished, and an absolute must play. The game is out Sep 18 for $59.99 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and included in Xbox Game Pass.

When Lies of P was announced a little shy of two years ago, the gaming world was baffled and reeling. A Victorian-era set Souls-like that’s like the beloved Bloodborne only it stars Pinnochio and follows the greater Pinnochio world? Surely there’s no way this game ever comes to fruition let alone turns out good? Folks, I’m here to tell you that developer Neowiz Games have proven us all wrong. I’m here to share the good word about the little Souls-like that could.

Lies of P is a thrilling soulslike that takes the story of Pinocchio, turns it on its head, and sets it against the darkly elegant backdrop of the Belle Epoque era. Reviewed on PC.

Lies of P is one of the most interesting, polished, and just plain fun souls-likes to release in a long time. There’s much more depth than meets the eye, thanks to its easily digestible but highly customizable systems. It’s a mysterious and dark twist on a classic story that’s surprisingly engaging throughout. The humanity and lying system adds a unique layer of roleplaying in dialogue rarely seen in this genre but it all still shows a reverence to the source material. Even in a packed year, it's hard not to urge anyone that has been missing Fromsoft’s souls-like formula to...

Co-op support like in other Soulslike games would have put Lies of P over the top, but even without it, the game will still greatly appeal to Soulslike fans. It has a lot going for it, and from a technical standpoint, it's basically perfect. It runs smooth as butter, looks fantastic, and has no glitches that we discovered. And while the writing can be clunky at times, the ending is legitimately wild and worth suffering through the worst bosses to reach. It's true that Lies of P gives in to some of the worst Soulslike instincts at times, but it...
Read Full ReviewLies of P was an interesting adventure. I really liked the blend of the classic tales of Pinocchio twisted into this strange and interesting world of puppets, rebellion, classism, and secrets. Being able to mix and match weapons and Legion Arms were delightful twists on my expectations of soulsborne combat mechanics. It's a shame the smaller enemies don't have more personality, and I also wish Pinocchio had more character to make playing him more enjoyable. That said, Lies of P is more than just a wooden facsimile of a soulsborne game. It gets the foundational stuff right and tweaks it...

Smooth combat, seamless exploration and a set of well-executed mechanics makes Lies of P an excellent Soulslike. When you add in the gorgeous visuals, desolate world design, stark sound design and engrossing story, it raises the experience above a lot of its contemporaries. All in all, although Lies of P is essentially Bloodborne featuring Timothée Chalamet, it does more than enough to mark itself out as a unique title worth your time – and I’m not lying.

While at first glance Lies of P might seem like ‘Bloodborne at home,’ Round8 Studio’s clockwork adventure writes its own unique story, filled to bursting with expansive Steampunk environments and defined by its well-balanced combat. In some cases, though, it gets a little too clever for its own good, tying itself up in opaque systems.

Despite being released over eight years ago, FromSoftware's Bloodborne is still among the most popular action role-playing games ever made, thanks to its unique atmosphere and gameplay mechanics. So far, a few soulslike games have tried to replicate this formula with little success, such as Spiders' Steelrising, but with Lies of P, NEOWIZ proved that it is indeed possible to create a solid action RPG in the same vein as FromSoftware's legendary title, although the lack of innovation does impact the experience a bit, even with the many tweaks made to the formula.

Despite its unique weapon system and generally friendlier structuring, Lies of P hews a little too closely to its inspirations to rise above feeling like something of an also-ran. But even also-rans can be polished, attractive, and exciting experiences in their own right.

Lies of P is a soulslike that struggles to totally detach itself from the pitfalls of a very well-trodden genre. In some ways, it’s a game that feels a bit outdated. These days, even FromSoftware’s own games are starting to diverge from years-long trends and ideas that have been recycled since 2011. Both Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring mark giant leaps in evolving the soulslike genre. And as we see more and more games trying to live up to the success of Dark Souls, It’s hard no...

Lies of P developer Neowiz proudly calls its The Adventures of Pinocchio-inspired action game a Soulslike, drawing direct attention to its From Software inspiration. The proclamation is a bold and risky move. While there are great contenders in this action subgenre, even the best are a few marks from what From Software creates and I went into Lies of P with that expectation. But then I put 40 hours into Lies of P in just five days, something I rarely do with any game. And then I doubled back on a save to get a different ending. And then I...

Inventive, challenging, and deliciously dark, Lies of P retains the core structures of similar action RPGs while adding new surprises to the mix. The potential for richer character builds and depth of choice for the player is bolstered by a haunting narrative that, despite the clunk of certain new mechanics, cements the experience as a powerful contender on the Soulslike scene.

I love it when a musical artist remixes a familiar song in new and unexpected ways. You know, like playing Green Day’s American Idiot as a guitar folk ballad. Sometimes these things work, sometimes not so much. When they hit, though, they can reveal hidden aspects or fresh perspectives. I thought of that while playing Lies of P. It’s an unapologetically Soulslike action game. But not just that. It’s also an unapologetic love letter to FromSoftware, and players will recognize ideas from all the Souls games, Elden Ring, Sekiro and, especially, Bloodborne. Still, Lies of P is more than a...

Lies of P is a worthy entry into the soulslike genre of gaming, particularly when the game allows its own unique elements to truly shine, such as its unique spread of weaponry and combat mechanics or its impressive story twists that can have you rediscovering what it means to be human. Top those parts off with large, well-designed levels with a ton of stuff to discover and terrific visuals in both beautiful scenery and terrifying monsters, and you have a great game in general that, despite occasional frustrations, is worth checking out, and that's no lie.

Pinocchio can be a neutered Disney fable, a stunning animated adventure with a fascist Italian backdrop, or, surprisingly, a Bloodborne-like action game that makes the titular puppet more akin to someone who bears the Hunter’s Mark. The beauty of public domain works is that they are afforded a level of flexibility that franchises owned by a singular entity do not have. Lies of P lies comfortably in that third category, and while derivative in some aspects, its beautiful environments and challenging boss fights make it more than a mere puppet of FromSoftware’s finest.

This dystopian tale of Pinocchio does a lot to stand on its own two feet, but when you strip all the set dressing away, it is simply a terrific love letter to Bloodborne. It is rough around the edges with some balancing issues and environment clipping causing you to get stuck in corners too easily, but with enough persistence (and skill), Lies of P is one of the best non-FromSoftware soulslikes yet.

Lies of P is a game that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Made by South Korean team Round8 Studio, it feels like the product of a developer taking its second or even third swing at the Souls-like formula. It puts the majority of other titles inspired by Dark Souls to shame, yet the only other game to the name of Round8 Studio is an MMORPG called Bless Unleashed. How has a relatively unknown developer managed to top some of the industry's elite with better combat, extensive customisation, and quality presentation? Lies of P is a game that doesn't...
