Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an amazing game, looking and running even better on PC. However, this version does come with caveats and even some downgrades such as crashing and slightly different weapon functionality. PS5 is still the best way to play, but for those who adore the series like me it’s well worth double dipping.

Ported over from PS5, this action-packed adventure is visually spectacular, but struggles to justify its premium price on PC.

A brilliant return to the old-age of PlayStation. Unapologetically fun, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, is relentless with the charm and the action. A must-play for anyone who’s managed to beat a scalper to get a PlayStation 5.

In vesting each weapon with the click and whir of a plaything, it gives you a way into the texture of its landscape, and before long you’re swept up.

If Spider-Man: Miles Morales reminded everyone why Sony was smart to tie down such a fantastic developer in Insomniac, then Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart cemented it. With its unique characters, family-friendly adventure plot, and top-tier graphics, there is little to dislike in this Lombaxian tale. Tale? Tail? Get it? Is this thing on?? Wow, what a tough crowd…

While no game is completely perfect, it’s hard to find fault with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The game is stunningly beautiful, incredibly smooth to play, and brilliantly written. A truly vibrant and dynamic universe you will never want to leave.

Make no mistake, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is a gorgeous, impressive next gen only experience that is bolstered by Insomniac’s technical wizardry (let’s not forget they shipped three games since the launch of PS5) and great storytelling to make it not only a great new entry in a long-running franchise but also a reason to own a PS5. It’s also a great introduction to new characters like Rivet that hopefully have as long a future as Ratchet and Clank have a past.

Quickly proving they are one of the most consistent AAA game studios in the industry is Insomniac Games, known most recently for the PlayStation exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man games and now for the interdimensional adventure, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Releasing as a PS5 exclusive and taking full advantage of the new system’s power, Rift Apart showcases a breathtakingly dense and vibrant world as players hop between dimensions as their favourite alien/robot duo.

Although Ratchet and Rivet's gameplay feels the same, there are also various mini game modes to freshen things up. The game's Glitch sections are a basic third-person shoot 'em-up where the player must shoot out virus hubs within networks, while the player takes control of Clank to fix dimensional shifts with little puzzles that feel like a simplistic version of Lemmings. It might not have quite the same level of variety as the fantastic It Takes Two, but nonetheless there is still plenty of changing gameplay throughout Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

After PlayStation released a number of games for free in March of this year – including 2016’s Ratchet & Clank remake – I had a great time revisiting the game to engage with what always made Insomniac’s series feel so good. Crisp and colourful visuals, weapon-based mayhem and a variety of worlds with different gimmicks all pull you through without ever giving you a chance to get bored. Gifting the game to all PlayStation users was a smart move too, because it left me primed and read...

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a true showpiece of new-gen technology. Whilst the internet argues over the matter of cross-generation games, Rift Apart avoids any such controversy since what it's doing simply isn't possible on the older hardware. I was tempted to go ahead and award a perfect score, but a familiar formula and some lacklustre puzzling prevented me from doing so. On the whole, though, this is gaming's summer blockbuster in the same vein that Hollywood emphasises this season for its big releases. For those with a PS5, it's an absolute must-play as a showcase of what's possible...

The PS5 is now over six months old and yet it only boasts a few true exclusives that fully utilize the hardware on offer. Sure, Astro’s Playroom is a charming freebie and introduction to the platform, Destruction AllStars is fun for a weekend or so, and Demon’s Souls and Returnal offer must-play yet challenging experiences, but there isn’t yet a full-sized game that’s for everyone. Enter Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, which brings old heroes into a shiny new spotlight for their best adventure yet, and the first PS5 game that’s accessible to all players.

While the PlayStation 5 remains as sought after as a Tottenham Hotspur trophy and an overpriced holiday abroad, those who have been lucky enough to get their mitts on Sony’s latest console in the months since launch haven’t exactly been drowning in games that really push the new hardware.

Anybody who has been listening to me over the past few months in Wccftech's gaming podcast knows two things. The first is that so far I have seen the PlayStation 5 as nothing but an extra-large paperweight, a console that I forgot how to turn on, and see as functionally useless due to the sheer lack of games out for it, with the possible exception of Returnal (read Kai's review here) - but I haven't bought that yet. The second is that I am a massive fan of Ratchet & Clank, and I've been looking forward to Ratchet & Clank:...

There's no doubt in my mind that Rift Apart has got the potential to be one of the biggest games of the year. Not only is it visually phenomenal, but the combat is fluid and the story is gripping. It's everything you could want from a Ratchet & Clank game, plus more.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a sequel that clings tightly to its storied heritage, never once betraying the foundation that was laid in 2002. From the second I took control of the fuzzy Lombax again, my muscle memory kicked in, and I was flipping through the air and smashing boxes like I had never stopped. Insomniac Games made a sequel for longtime fans that hits the right classic notes, feeling like a glorious reunion, even though these characters never left our side. The heavy doses of nostalgia are handled with care but are only half of what make this...

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is easily the best game in the series by far. Though surprisingly, it isn’t the fact that it looks jaw-droppingly gorgeous that impresses the most. Instead, it’s the sheer variety of gameplay that Insomniac Games has managed to cram into its running time, with each and every aspect of it flawlessly complementing the others. With effectively zero loading times, from the moment you boot up Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart you’re engrossed in its engaging story and eclectic mix of third-person shooting, platforming, dimensional shifting and a whole lot more. And it’s all so polished...

The opening moments of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart riff on the fact that there hasn’t been a brand new Ratchet and Clank adventure in nearly a decade. The Lombax and his robot pal are attending a parade as the guests of honor, and Ratchet remarks that he doesn’t know why there’s a parade focused on them; they haven’t really done anything in forever. It’s a nice wink, nod, and grin at the player. As a longtime Ratchet and Clank fan, I appreciated Insomniac almost speaking directly to me, as if to say “we got you.”

If the Earth was in peril from intergalactic invaders and needed a game developer to save its ass, governments across the globe would turn to Insomniac Games. You can practically bank on the Burbank-based developer to deliver top-notch titles these days, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is no exception. TL;DR: this PlayStation 5 exclusive action platformer is virtually flawless at what it sets out to do.

This is a full-fat, planet-hopping, mystery-filled adventure that PS5 owners will lap up and non-owners will resent not being able to play, perhaps through no lack of trying. Miles Morales and Demon's Souls were superb launch titles for the PS5, but we're now through the looking glass. The bar has been set. The PS5 has arrived.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart isn’t afraid to revel in its mascot-platformer roots, but it manages to knock so many of its competitors completely out of the water. The secret sauce? Insomniac knows that a strong presentation goes a long way, and they’ve stretched this formula about as far as it can go with plenty of customization and a compelling world to play around in. While it’s uneven at times, it’ll suck you into the universe of Ratchet & Clank all over again.

As far as next-gen exclusives go, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart hits the most important notes. It’s visually striking, mechanically sound and diverse, and it takes advantage of the bells and whistles tied to the new platform. Some might be disappointed by the story, but overall the dimension-hopping adventure is exactly the type of fun-loving experience that Insomniac Games has been delivering since the very beginning. At a time when there aren’t a lot of games highlighting the power of next-gen, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart shows the next big leap for gaming.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a masterpiece. It would have been enough for Insomniac to keep the series' core spirit alive and add a few new ideas that take advantage of the PS5 hardware. This game certainly does do that. However, it's the creativity in the game's weaponry, the lovable characters, the engaging story with its Saturday morning cartoon atmosphere, the exciting worlds, and the game's penchant for clever humor that made Rift Apart feel special.
