Despite its popularity, Monster Hunter is notoriously hard to get into. Each new release conjures a crowd of eager but intimidated gamers asking, "Is this the one to start with?" Thanks to its refined combat, thrilling cutscenes, and endlessly engaging gameplay loop, Monster Hunter Wilds is an excellent entry point. While the tutorials are still lacking and many mechanics are far from intuitive, Wilds accommodates those interested in a simpler approach without compromising its most exciting e...

All in all, this is an exceptional game. In 2018, Monster Hunter World stunned the industry by becoming Capcom's fastest-selling game, surpassing sales juggernauts like Resident Evil and Street Fighter.Monster Hunter is mainstream now in all the best ways, and Wilds is the flag planted on the top of the hill.

Since the 2016 release of Monster Hunter: Worlds, the Monster Hunter franchise has become an all-time favourite of mine, being welcomed into a solid community I’ve poured hundreds of hours into. From Worlds itself, to the criminally underappreciated Rise and its expansion Sunbreak. Or the charming spin-offs in Stories and Wings of Ruin. Monster Hunter: Wilds marks the next mainline entry in the long-running series, bringing back the same familiar gameplay loop, whilst making it a touch more...

I’d love to talk about and gush over all of the cool aspects of Wilds, but for a review, there’s largely no point because the overbearing streamlining, hand-holding, and dumbing down of the game completely ruins those cool aspects for me. Anything positive thing I could say would have a hundred caveats waiting in the wings. For the first time, I have a new entry in one of my favorite video game series, and I have absolutely no desire to play it.

Monster Hunter Wilds will inevitably go down as the best launch in the franchise's history. It has been an extremely satisfying to play and holds a great story behind its open world.
Read Full ReviewMonster Hunter Wilds is the latest entry into the beloved RPG series from Capcom. The game strives to be welcoming to new players while providing veteran Hunters with a challenge, but doesn't always succeed, despite the admirable effort of the developers. It offers a narrative-driven adventure that will have you research, prepare for and carefully hunt monsters, while also building upon and iterating on previous games' systems.

Overall there’s been a fair bit of negativity in this review. I hope the post-launch support brings the gear grind that series veterans know and love. As things are at launch if you have a group of friends to play with it will be a fun, albeit easy 30 to 40 hours before you run out of content to push. If they can bring back the grind of needing specific items to have any chance against the toughest monsters then you can add a few points to this final launch score.

Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest entry in Capcom’s long-running multiplayer beast-slaying series, and a return to home consoles after the Switch-focused release of its predecessor, Monster Hunter Rise. Taking more inspiration from 2018’s Monster Hunter World, with its greater focus on narrative and spectacle and the return of many gameplay mechanics left out of Rise, Monster Hunter Wilds feels like a fantastic refinement of the direction that the series has evolved over the past few yea...

It’d be fair to say that I’ve got a bit of a weird relationship with the Monster Hunter franchise. My first entry into the series, World, was also the first time I’d reviewed one of these games. You may have missed it at the time, but suffice to say the community certainly left an impression on me. (To be blunt, the fact that Hamish received ANY death threats at all, let alone for a 7.5/10 review, is absolutely appalling. Check yourself, and know that any ridiculous bullshit will be loc...

And speaking of monster design, Monster Hunter WIlds couldn't have done better when it comes to creating a massive menagerie of awe-inspiring creatures. Unfortunately, I can't discuss some of my personal favorite monsters without spoiling the latter half of the story, but suffice it to say that both new and returning monsters are done justice here. Each monster really feels like a part of its ecosystem, whether it's fighitng smaller creatures for dominance or swinging around on webbed ropes. The game doesn't reuse many monsters from Rise or World, so most of them will be new to more recent fans.

Monster Hunter Wilds starts with big hunts and breathtaking action scenes. By the end of the story and beyond, you’ll be hunting even larger monsters with impossibly larger attacks, harvesting materials from their bodies to make stronger weapons and tougher armor.

This is a fantastic installment in the series that feels filled with opportunities. There’s so much to do here, and a captivating campaign that moves along so well and properly introduces you to the monsters, region, and mechanics only helps enhance it all. Monster Hunter Wilds is a joy to play, a step forward for the series, and perhaps the best entry yet.

Monster Hunter Wilds is the best Monster Hunter game we’ve ever had. The best storyline, the best visuals, and changes to the combat that revolutionise the way the game plays. That said, striving for the widest audience yet has dulled some of the series difficulty, and you may have to wait for the toughest parts of Wilds to fully reveal themselves.

While it may be a step down from its predecessor, Monster Hunter Wilds is still a great game with significant quality-of-life improvements, many of which shake up the formula for the better. But Capcom went a little too far in its effort to make the game more accessible to the masses, to the point where it risks alienating its most hardcore fans. Even so, what's here is a meaty experience that scratches that Monster Hunter itch, as long as you don't rely too much on the SOS flare support hunters.

Monster Hunter Wilds is a fun experience and has all the staples that make the series so enjoyable. Unfortunately, some choices make it hard to enjoy yourself for a significant amount of time while making your way to the portion of the game that you’re trying to experience. The main story aims to provide players with a more immersive experience, but ends up getting in the way of the fighting monsters at a reliable pace, forcing you from point A to B frequently before allowing you to engage with these newly-added monsters. After 100 hours of gameplay and reaching Hunter Rank 110, I can confidently say that Monster Hunter Wilds is a better game than World and Rise. Largely focusing on streamlining and making the overall experience more accessible, without removing the core principles that veteran hunters have come to know and love, Monster Hunter Wilds is a game that should be experienced by everyone. While the main story isn't anything to write home about, it's still an enjoyable one and a great way to get prepared for the real game — High Rank. 2025 is packed with current and upcoming games...

Monster Hunter Wilds moves the franchise forward from previous games, yet it tends to step into some of the same traps that both World and Rise did. Those issues, however, are dwarfed by an addictive gameplay loop that will keep players engaged for hundreds of hours. Monster Hunter Wilds is a good new addition to this long-running series. Monster Hunter Wilds delivers a ton of incredible new content, buried underneath the usual UI nightmare plus a long, interminable campaign. The new features of the game are fun and exciting once the game opens up, and there are a ton of awesome new monsters to battle. The graphics, as always, are stunning. But wading through the mud of this story for 15-20 hours is downright painful, and the franchise's tradition of not explaining itself is getting extremely old. There is a fabulous Monster Hunter game here, but sooner or later this franchise is going to have to wake up...

Monster Hunter Wilds is a bold and bustling continuation of its predecessor’s approach to streamlining the once-niche series. By stripping away some of the more frustrating elements of the past, and focusing on getting players into hunts as quickly as possible, Monster Hunter Wilds has the potential to launch the series to new heights. Despite running since 2004, it took the Monster Hunter series multiple installments to reach the level of popularity it enjoys today, and that's largely due to the much-improved accessibility. Much like the first entries in FromSoftware's Souls series, the early Monster Hunter games had some obscure mechanics that weren't properly explained in-game and required some experimentation to properly grasp. Since 2018's Monster Hunter World, however, making the series more accessible has become one of the main focuses, an effort that has paid off immensely, as working on making the franchise more accessible to newcomers also addressed some of the series'...

Monster Hunter Wilds offers the best hunting and combat in the series’ history. Intense fights are at the heart of the experience, and the large, open world and its various ecosystem changes are spectacles to see from afar and up close in the middle of a hunt. It is only bolstered by some fantastic audio, music, and feedback as you slash, carve, and batter monsters. However, the game’s characters don’t have enough air to breathe amongst the wider narrative and the lack of pinnacle fights and endgame challenges are a severe downgrade from other games in the series.

Monster Hunter Wilds builds on Worlds’ combat, crafting, and upgrade systems. The new open zones and more complex monster behaviors are impressive and interesting to explore, and as always, hunts can be challenging, rewarding, exhausting, and fun. The lack of new weapons is disappointing, as are the many technical issues and the game’s often unpolished feel. The bigger environments and more open-ended gameplay could have been the foundation for something really new and special. Monster Hunter Wilds feels like a lateral move rather than a significant advance.
