Despite these reservations, Omega Force should be applauded for what is the boldest entry in the franchise in recent times and a game that, once you wade through the muck, stands as an engaging and intense Musou game that maintains its classic feel whilst evolving the series. For fans, this game is certainly not an entry to eschew, or rather e-Shu.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a fantastic revival of a classic franchise that seemed like it was once on death's door. Origins is a complete breathe of fresh air while feeling familiar but adding much needed gameplay changes and tactics to make everything feel fresh. This is the true next generation leap for the series. If you are a fan of this series you owe it to yourself to play Origins. I cannot wait to see how they build off of this for the future.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms can be a thrilling story. While it is tragic, there’s a lot of frontline action and unique characters to meet. Dynasty Warriors: Origins puts you in the front seat of this epic saga, letting you experience the tale for yourself. It’s a bigger responsibility than you realise as you eventually decide how the story ends. You meet the big players from the start of the tale and ally with one of them to unite the kingdoms together.

Omega Force is no stranger to dealing in RPGs with its hack-and-slash gameplay. Dynasty Warriors: Origins sees things coming full circle and applying that found expertise in its flagship series.

Some very minor improvements to the Dynasty Warriors formula but this is just as vapid and repetitive as it was back in the PlayStation 2 era, only now with relatively modern graphics.

Taking the long-running hack n' slash series into a fully-fledged action RPG experience, developer Omega Force has revived this series revolving around the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in a stunning fashion at the cost of scaling back what it used to offer before.

At every point, Dynasty Warriors: Origins tells me how important I am, how crucial my role is, how the battles would have been lost without me. It is hollow, all of it. I am the most important man there is in a story that I cannot change because this is the way the story goes. I am a peacemaker who brings peace through slaughter. A weapon to be wielded to tame a violent nation. I am a gun. And God help me, in the moment, as I land the attack that I know may be killing the kid I made...

Everything that makes Dynasty Warriors great has been built on and amplified in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. The fast-paced combat is more fluid and satisfying than ever, and I think the decision to allow players to build up their own character is the right move for the franchise moving forward. I wasn’t sure how Omega Force could take a series coming up on three decades old and make it appealing to newcomers while appeasing long-time fans, but they found a way. For me, this is the best Dynasty Warriors yet, and I’m excited to see what’s next.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is not only the best entry point for newcomers, but one of the best offerings the series has had in recent memory. The intimate zoomed-in story portrays the Three Kingdoms figures as likeable and complex characters with compelling motives. Combat can be hit or miss, but there's no denying the unmatched scale and spectacle of the 1-v-1000 battles.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins became one of my most anticipated games after getting to go hands-on with it late last year. The good news is that Koei Tecmo has completely delivered on its promising revamp of the series. The bad news? Well, there isn’t any. The game is great and some of the most fun I’ve had in an action game in years.

Dynasty Warriors Origins is an incredibly confident and successful revamp of a series that desperately needed it, offering up the most absurdly satisfying ‘1 vs 1,000’ gameplay backed up by surprisingly nice visuals, rock-solid performance on console, and a belter of a soundtrack. The core Warriors identity remains intact, but the change to a sole playable protagonist does end up feeling like quite a strange choice in the end.

Another attempt to reinvigorate the Dynasty Warriors franchise, but a lackluster protagonist, sidelining of series favorites and tedious dialog distracts from some solid gameplay additions.

But while I enjoyed my time with the game’s combat, I couldn’t help but find myself becoming more bored as the game progressed. The combat was still fun, don’t get me wrong, but the story’s presentation was dry in a way that felt like you were watching a movie your old history teacher put on in high school. There’s nothing technically wrong with it, but for a series that is meant to be a bit silly and melodramatic, the more grounded presentation puts a damper on Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Purely a game, it’s a good time. As a Dynasty Warriors...

What a difference seven years makes. In 2018, the dismal Dynasty Warriors 9 effectively put Koei Tecmo's storied hack and slash series on ice, but Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a completely different beast. For the first time in generations, the franchise feels fresh again — a genuine evolution of what's come before.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is essentially a reboot of the series, retelling the familiar story from a more personal perspective with a new amnesiac protagonist. The good news is that it works, with the narrative being more engaging than ever. But it's the gameplay that truly impresses, with multiple changes to the combat system resulting in this being the most dynamic and rewarding Dynasty Warriors game to date.

As someone who has zealously played every entry in the series since its inception more than two decades ago, I'd say Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the best Musou game ever. After years of unsurprising reiteration and plenty of misfires, Omega Force has delivered a smart and super polished reinvention of the Musou franchise that corrects so many of its past shortcomings.

Dynasty Warriors Origins provides a compact narrative from the Yellow Turban Rebellion up through the Battle of Chibi and the formation of the Three Kingdoms. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a brilliant reboot of the series. Playing as a central character instead of hopping between classic heroes works. It looks damned good most of the time, sounds great, and features an excellent mix of group and single-fighter combat. It’s been nearly seven years since the release of the last mainline Dynasty Warriors game. Dynasty Warriors 9 was a gigantic failure in every single aspect, with an unnecessary emphasis on open-world exploration, terrible visuals and poor framerate. Over the past few years, Omega Force and Koei Tecmo had decided to focus on licensed takes on the Musou genre, as well as a higher emphasis on the Samurai Warriors subfranchise, instead of their marquee Chinese-themed juggernaut. The wait is fin...

Dynasty Warriors: Origins offers the familiar gameplay the series is known for, while also making drastic changes in other areas. Longtime fans of the series will feel at home slaughtering countless enemies by themselves, but the approach to storytelling with the Wanderer character helps make things feel new again. It's interesting to watch the Wanderer's story unfold over the familiar events during the beginning of the Three Kingdoms area. The time period of which the game covers is shorter than previous games, but this allows for greater depth for both the Wanderer's story and the Three Kingdoms. This makes Dynasty...

A mostly bland story and a lack of additional playable characters are the only major faults with Dynasty Warriors: Origins. It is the most polished, mechanically rewarding, and technically impressive game in the series so far, and an easy pickup for fans of the franchise, provided they're open to new ideas like the parry system and original, single lead. And if you've never been into Dynasty Warriors in the past, it's worth taking the leap with Dynasty Warriors: Origins—you might just learn what all the fuss is about.

By not numbering this latest game, the developers are signaling a rebirth of the series. In many ways that’s true. The action-RPG mechanics and narrative-heavy design bring the franchise in line with other ARPGs. At the same time, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is still a Musou game at heart. The immense battles fans of the genre love are still there. There’s less of a repetitive feeling this time around, and the game should be successful in courting new players coming from other ARPGs.

Dynasty Warriors Origins tries very hard to reboot the series in meaningful ways, and for the most part, it’s successful in creating a more focused single-player experience. It delves deep into the richness of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story, even if it’s at times very poorly told. The core battle mechanics are perhaps the best in the series, with many additions to keep you engaged in combat, but there’s a lot of busywork and bloat that hampers its vision.
